Construction near my office has been ongoing for the past year. I don’t mind, it reminds me of the work I used to do.

At first the work took place in an area that allowed me to talk to the workers as I walked to my building. But, as things progressed, I was sad to see them relocate further down the road. Although our greetings were brief, I always enjoyed a friendly ‘Good Morning’ on my way into the office.

I had connected with one worker in particular – not at a deep level, he was just one of those people I knew I would like. Luckily, he is now stationed near the entrance of my parking lot.

Every morning I slow down as I pass and, no matter what he is doing, what time it is, or who he is talking to, he smiles and waves as if I were his best friend.

For months now we have shared these brief exchanges. My spirit is lighter every morning because I feel his support even though I have not conversed with him for longer than 3-5 seconds. I look forward to seeing him and I am disappointed when he is not there. He makes me feel more hopeful, more confident, and ready for the day. His wave means a lot to me.

I finally introduced myself to him this week (he knew me as the White Camry dude). His name is Melvin.

We all want to change the world, but we forget how much power simple actions hold.

In today’s world, a wave can be particularly impactful because it reminds us that we are valued. A wave can show those around us that we recognize them, that we are aware, and that we care. Melvin has shown me that, no matter how busy we are, other people are worth at least a wave.

I hope we do big things, fight for what we believe, work hard, and accomplish mighty miracles. But really, I just hope we wave.
